Performance Level in the 1st Sinnalugan@Sapat Downhill MTB Challenge

Bird's Eye View

Over the weekend, as typhoon signal #2 threatened Ilocos Norte, 58 downhillers from Manila, Pangasinan, Baguio, La Union and Laoag traveled miles to compete against each other on the slopes at Pasuquin in the 1st Sinnalugan@Sapat. Thank God, the heavens were bright and the earth was hard til every bike was packed up! A successful finish for the downhill bike challenge exhaustively prepared for a good many weekends by the Batibols Bikers in cooperation with the peoples of barangays Sulbec and Sapat. The extended support from DROP Downhill Philippines, led by President Erwin Benipayo, and National Downhill Team Coach Arjuna Saulo is very much appreciated. The same goes to the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, headed by Gov. Imee Marcos; the LGU of Pasuquin; the Philippine National Red Cross Ilocos Chapter; and other benevolent sponsors.

Up to the Sapat and Sulbec mountains

Fresh from a thirst-quenching afternoon up in Pasuquin… still in a state of exhilaration while typing.

As the boys locomoted straight down the Sapat-Sulbec mountainside, looking like jackhammers on an extremely-rugged-but-much-less-pristine terrain, with telltale signs of previous mining activities, though now fairly reforested with pine trees, I  did a mini hike, at some point reveled in time alone, sucking in the milieu of placidity, musing on nature’s artistry and playing with my D90.

After the rains, it was difficult capturing the Estancia Sexy Beach, which frustratingly got lost in the cloudy pale blue skies. Lotus stance on a bedrock, sedating cool breeze, chirping bird sounds, the scent of pine — just fleeting, unphotographable moments in between shots…
