Inside the Dover Street Market Los Angeles

From the enlivened junkyard in the desert, let me take you to the reestablished warehouse section in Downtown Los Angeles.

Late last year, from London to Singapore, Comme des Garcons’ Rei Kawakubo and husband Adrian Joffe brought their sixth multi-brand Dover Street Market to the West Coast. Far-off the swanky Westside and into the fertile grounds of the Los Angeles Arts District, home to trendy cafes, art galleries, local artisan shops and concept stores.

Next to the mouthwatering array of sneakers, from Gucci to Vans, I got fixated on the art pieces and installations.

Dover Street Market’s own “beautiful chaos” theme is made more striking by the fact that cutting-edge fashion shares the same platform with artists using recycled materials. Changing every several months, I heard, the quirky, refreshing art leaves you with a smile. Keep making that smile contagious, DSM!

Model Farm: Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch

Processed with VSCO with ke1 preset

Somewhere in the dry California desert, a museum worthy of a Mad Max scene attracts only those who can see beyond dust and rust.

A junkyard turned into a bottle tree farm on Route 66 in the San Bernardino County looks like a lifelong project for Elmer Long. A work of art with countless storied bottles and other remnants, reminding visitors of both the past and the future, is the most inspiring sight in this day and age of overstuffing. As a proverb goes, “Good tree makes good fruit.”

Like Elmer, maybe we can start planting good deeds for other generations to enjoy.

The Red Dot Christmas Personified Party

Sparkly Cristmas Party

High caliber husband and wife event stylists Ace and Kit Mandac (of Ava’s), and myself were invited by Red Dot marketing manager, Ace Joseph Rumbao, to judge the company Christmas party fashion show and cheers/yells contest last night. How could I say no to the creative and nice people behind the trendsetting Red Dot of Laoag?

I found out that this year, at the back of the Christmas-emblematized theme, the staff had to stick to the strict rule of upcycling only something borrowed and something old (as in unusable stuff from the company storeroom, etc.) It amazes me that with the imagination given full play, fun and glint are attainable despite the fact that the general mood of this particular season is moderation. In hindsight, the Christmas season is unchangingly a totality of getting together, remembrance,  giving thanks and pats on the back.

Little drummer boy came in close to top placer uncut Christmas tree, while the Plains and Prints Pangasinan team won for their unitary cheering savvy. Ace would have comfortably landed among the finalists for his Victoria’s Secret angel wings, but he was presenter, so he’s the dynamite of the season:)
