Blue Moon Birthday Dinner

Birthday Sunset

All my birthdays are memorable, though simple, always with love ones. Saturday night was reserved for a pre-birthday dinner.  I bought the wine and roses myself, asked good friend Chef Jackie de la Cruz to help me out with the menu… an offbeat something… there’s so much to celebrate in life — a loving family, independent-minded kids, beautiful friendships, strength — all I could ask for. Thank you, God!

I’m likewise grateful for all the people I’ve met through the blog, my regular readers, the awesome discoveries and wonderful opportunities that blogging has given me.

Birthday Cake

Extending my thanks to Chef Jack for the appetizing amuse-bouche that set the tone for the bouncy dinner consisting of cream of squash soup, rolled lasagna, steak and potatoes au gratin, and apple crumble; Ka-bloom for arranging my fresh pink roses and Kit and Ace Mandac of Ava’s Cakes for accommodating my sweet Tiffany box cake. The couple are currently styling an event in San Diego. Hahah, they can extend their vacay ‘coz their girls can give them a run for their money, don’t you think? And last, but not the least, my family who gave me breathing space to be with special girlfriends Ann, Me-Ann, Teenie and Marianne (Marla, Ona and the other Marianne were out of town).

Designer burgers by Chef Jackie de la Cruz

Burger Tay Lang

Here and now, when the market is saturated with fast food burgers, I don’t mind paying a premium for luxury burgers. Just when I abandoned the chase for the best burger in Laoag, Chef Jackie de la Cruz, winner of the first Ilocos Norte Coof-Off Challenge, organized by the Ilocos Norte Tourism Office a couple of years back, and owner of Giannis (recently adjudged among the best places to eat in Ilocos by a TV show), invites us to try out what he calls “burger tay lang.”

Earning his culinary education at the Center for Culinary Arts (CCA), Chef Jackie will eat at hole in the wall carinderias, but when it comes to steaks and burgers, he wants to pick his own beef and cook it in his own style. He knows too well the family’s weakness for burgers and vice versa. We chanced upon each other at Brothers once and dined there together a number of times, so I can reveal it is easy traveling with him.

‘Coz I respect his creativity, and more than that, I am a true friend, I won’t spill his secret ingredients. I’m not going to hype up his creation either. But, YES, it is possible to pre-order his grilled all-beef-patty hamburgers. Giannis caters, btw.
