Man of the hour: Rudy Fariñas

I just watched 127 Hours, and I was so moved by the gripping story of Aron Ralston’s inspiring unflinching spirit — from Aron’s carefree ways that lead him to an abyss of self-instrospection to a second shot at life. I can’t help, but think of the man of the hour, Congressman Rudy Fariñas, who has bravely and painfully survived his huge rock. Both men may have lost something somewhere, but not the will to live more meaningful lives.

A few things I know about Rudy Fariñas:

  • He loves his family to death. He’ll do anything to protect his children.
  • He has an incredible memory.
  • He loves nature and has climbed Mt. Pulag with his children.
  • He can’t stand ineptness.
  • He can be stern, but he can make you feel special, as well.
  • He has the charisma of a celebrity and enough scandals attached to him. I don’t know if he is aware of it, depending on one’s perception of him, “actor” is his other name in Laoag.
  • He loves to eat out with his family.
  • He can be a very loyal friend.
  • He loves joking around.
  • He is a neat dresser. I remember seeing him in a boy’s suit (coat with shorts) to a formal occasion.
  • He used to sport a Steven Seagal look. (Glad he got over that phase!)
  • He is a voracious reader.
  • Unlike most politicians, he lives a modest lifestyle.
  • His former staff at the City Hall and the Capitol adore him.
  • He doesn’t hold grudges.
  • He hasn’t been seen dating a woman after Maria left.
  • He values old customs and traditions.
  • He makes mistakes, but is man enough to own them.
  • He stands on his own.
