Brewed kape barako with old-fashioned balicocha

When I was little, my nanny used to buy me bags of  curly-shaped candies with a texture close to Violet Crumble’s melt-in-your-mouth honeycomb-like center, but had the taste of tira tira and palinang. Made from all-natural sugarcane, these candies, called balicocha, are still available at the tiendaan (local market).

The rains pouring over Laoag, since early this afternoon, brought me to nostalgia. My usual tall homemade iced coffee was replaced with brewed kape barako (local Batangas coffee). I mixed in 2 pieces of balicocha and cream. It had that very Pinoy caramelized sugar flavor, the same  flavor that makes leche flan, sago at gulaman and banana cue oh so good.
