Beer-Cooked Kielbasa with Sautéed Potatoes and Onions

I ran across kielbasa (Polish pork sausage flavored with caraway) by Treffpunkt (a German restaurant/beer place on Liberty Ave. corner EDSA, Cubao) at Robinsons supermarket. I’ve always loved the combination of sausage and sauerkraut, but since I can’t find sauerkraut in Laoag, I thought of poaching kielbasa in beer and brown sugar and pairing it with simple caramelized onions and sautéed potato cubes, sprinkled with a little paprika and rock salt, then serving the dish with mustard. I used the same beer-brown sugar liquid to boil the potatoes before sautéing them in olive oil.

The boys and Alexa loved the combo. The sausages lacked the exact smokiness I was looking for, but at 115 pesos, plus a few more pesos for beer, potatoes and onions, I think the Treffpunkt sausages are a good deal.

Well, I watched the President’s SONA on TV. I have to congratulate him for delivering a well-crafted (albeit longish) speech. Also, for the quantum jump in the economy. I see sincerity in his heart as a public servant. I hope by the end of his term, wangwang mentality and corruption, in all its forms, will be considerably, if not completely eradicated. Those two are the biggest issues the administration has to tackle as those two influence the majority mindset, in my own humble opinion. To borrow John Maxwell’s words, “All leadership is influence.”
