I’ve been passing by this popcorn stand in the mall for probably a year now. The individually packaged tubs didn’t appeal to me; I thought they were fancified generic popcorn. I really don’t know what made me do a 180 degree turn today. I got what the sales assistant suggested. Not even the 170-peso price tag would change my state of mind.
Surprise, surprise! Not your typical popcorn with nasty, destructive, hard as stone tip caps. The shape of the pops is almost uniform, the texture is consistent with a lovely, soft crunch, and the flavor — Belgian Butter — is full, fresh and tickles the taste buds with perfect saltiness and a sweet, milky undertone.
In my humble opinion, Chef Tony’s gourmet popcorn deserves the self-label. Their website says, “No trans fats, no preservatives, non-GMO [genetically modified organisms] corn and oils, no artificial whatchamacallits.” Not to mention, the ethical and sustainable business practices they claim.
Getting the white chocolate Parmesan next. Btw, I saw sugar-free variants. The stand is at the northern end of the ground level of Robinsons Ilocos.
